If any of you were still waiting for the promised new model history curriculum which was due to appear by the end of this year you can now rest easy. It’s been shelved. Instead there is a new more wide ranging curriculum review due to be published next year which will focus of the following priorities. Please read my correspondence below:
Dear Mr Thompson
Thank you for your email of 2 December about the model curriculum for history.
It may be useful if I explain that in the context of the new Curriculum and Assessment Review (CAR) announced by the government, ministers have decided to end the work on the model history curriculum.
You can read more about the CAR at:
https://www.gov.uk/government/groups/curriculum-and-assessment-review
Specifically it will seek to deliver:
- an excellent foundation in core subjects of reading, writing and maths
- a broader curriculum, with improved access to music, art, sport and drama, as well as vocational subjects
- a curriculum that ensures children and young people leave compulsory education ready for life and ready for work
- a curriculum that reflects the issues and diversities of our society, ensuring all children and young people are represented
- an assessment system that captures:
- the strengths of every child and young person
- the breadth of the curriculum
As you will see the CAR will look across the curriculum to ensure that every child is represented in what they learn at school and inspired by a rich and diverse curriculum. The review will publish recommendations in 2025.
Thank you once again for writing. I hope you find this information helpful
You will notice that there is no specific reference to history other than it is likely to be squeezed in terms of time by the access afforded to a wider range of creative subjects . We will keep you posted on developments in the New Year….
