As we all know, developing pupils’ extended written answers requires structures preparation. Pupils need to develop their own thinking on the topic. they then need to develop a vocabulary to articulate their ideas. They then need to voice these orally, and with confidence, before committing them to paper. Here is an example of what I mean. This pupil worked through the history mystery on the Battle of Marathon (see full lesson in outstanding lessons Ancient Greece KQ3-part 2) and got involved in some lively debate about the real reasons for the Athenian victory. What followed was a developed piece of explanatory writing, the qualities of which you can see for yourself.
