This GCSE lesson , which could also work at AS level, uses two principal activities, known as ‘market place’ and ‘spectrum’ to help students to work out how individuals, and then groups within German society, fared under Hitler’s control.  Who prospered, who suffered?  Who supported, who opposed?  For the most able, there is an extension task of creating a living graph to show changing attitudes over time.

Learning objectives

  • students grasp the main reason why some groups within German society supported, while others criticised, Nazi rule
  • they  can select and deploy statistical evidence to support views that there were limits to the success of Nazi rule
  • they can weigh the relative strength of the evidence provided and see how care needs to be taken when using raw data, such as unemployment figures
  • more able students are able to bring a strong chronological dimension to their answers

Starter

Students are introduced to the GCSE question which is on the screen when the students arrive (PowerPoint slide 1).  Students are asked to list the aspects they need to consider when answering the question. To ensure that students look at the entire parameters of the question, students are introduced to the front cover
