This task, suitable for KS3 Year 9 or KS4 students, presents them with something of a conundrum.  When the Allies had far more men than the Germans and had fired millions of shells the previous week why was the first day of the Battle of the Somme such a disaster?

Having been shown Haig’s own description of the events of the first day of the Somme, students construct their own explanation using the dozen influence cards provided and their additional contextual knowledge. What matters is how students attach different significance to individual pieces of information as they form their own most compelling explanations. PowerPoint and Resource sheet provided.
