This task, suitable for Y9 in KS3 or KS4, drives at the heart of source evaluation. Students explore two sources, authored by the same journalist, Philip Gibbs, but written 4 years apart. They are asked to spot, and then explain the difference in tone and purpose(s) of the two documents. Resource sheet provided.
They learn that the first source was written by one of the five journalists who were officially allowed to report on the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. Students should notice that the tone is really positive, but can they work out why?
