OFSTED’s recent report ( 2023) highlighted the following 5 key messages about assessment in primary history.
Over the next few months we will be further developing our assessment material in line with these principles.

1. Formative assessments are designed to identify gaps in pupils’ knowledge of specific content and concepts so teachers can therefore meaningfully address them

The key here is to focus on disciplinary concepts not just content knowledge. This means that assessment tasks need to have a clear focus on one particular concept e.g. cause or change. You will see from the accompanying chart how we have tried to do this. Our intention is to populate the entire grid with the concepts that match the way the topic has been planned. This means that some topics will not be addressing certain concepts because they are not good contexts for developing those ideas.
