At the planning stage make sure all topics are carefully linked and logically sequenced so teachers know what they can refer back to and show what is to follow often through use of timelines.

As part of your planning process consider which topics lend themselves best to the development of particular disciplinary concepts

3. Familiarise yourself with disciplinary concepts for each enquiry question

Make sure that you know which disciplinary concepts are being emphasised within each enquiry question and sequence of lessons. Plot these opportunities on a grid so teachers know what they need to build on and link to. How is the pupils’ understanding of these concepts being progressively developed?

4. Use enquiry questions to develop historical knowledge AND historical analysis

Develop pupils’ historical knowledge and their historical analysis simultaneously through the chosen enquiry question

5. Use well-crafted, fit for purpose activities

Use well-crafted fit for purpose activities which give pupils specific opportunities to develop their knowledge of particularly important substantive concepts within each question. Don’t be afraid of re-using similar activities when next addressing that concept.
