Two great tasks which together make up Key Question 5 of the Britain at War medium term plan, Why is it so difficult to be sure what life was really like on the Home Front? This is a crucial question to be asking with Upper Juniors as it opens up discussion on issues of censorship and propaganda. It is important that all pupils leaving primary school are aware that all they see read in print and see in photos or on TV may not be ‘true’. They need to think carefully about the purposes for which documents were written and photographs taken and their likely effect on the intended audience.
Both activities look at the key ideas of censorship, keeping up morale and propaganda in an active and engaging way using original posters and photographs, placing pupils in the role of censors and fake detectors. Using the Mantle of the Expert approach, your kids will love learning these complex ideas in such an active way.
