September is always a good time to think through what you should be doing as history leader now that you’ve got your own class settled in. The whole compass of the job can seem bewildering. Even knowing where to start is problematic. The advice I always give is to be most active in the area where you’re most likely to have the biggest impact. To my mind, this lies in the area of quality medium term planning. Whether you attend the year team planning meetings or simply cast your eye over and make comments on, you simply MUST know in detail what is happening in the name of history. For many years I came across subject leaders who didn’t even have copies of the history plans across the school and sometimes felt awkward asking for them. Those days are now mercifully fading fast but they still exist.
There’s obviously more to it though than just having copies of the plans. What do you do with them? This is where your overview comes in. However good at teaching history individuals and year teams are they still need your guidance. How else will they know exactly what part they play in
