This list is by no means exhaustive nor is it linked to just one key stage. You can think of even more, I’m sure. For that reason I have kept the descriptions brief so as not to elaborate on what you already know and do. All I would say is that the list gives you a flavour of strategies that have proved to be highly effective across K2,3 and 4. Who knows, there may be one or two you might like to try!

1. Quizzes

Low stakes 10 factual questions on 10 key things all students need to know to fully understand the period not just any old questions. On the site there are examples of these for the Vikings  , Anglo-Saxons and for Ancient Egypt.

2. Multiple choice questions

The skill here is to present pupils with answers that are plausible at first glance, thereby encouraging deeper thinking rather than a superficial rush to ‘spot the right answer’. This is a great way of teasing out misconceptions so the dialogue with the class when fielding their choices and reasoning is crucial.
