In this session pupils explore what drove Rosa to take her stand in December 1955, going beyond oversimplification of a tired seamstress to examining evidence that she was politically motivated.

- Children can offer relevant ideas as to Rosa’s motivation
- They can reject suggestions for her motivation that would not have been likely
- Some can see that the standard story oversimplifies and that Rosa wasn’t simply a tired lady at the end of the day but an active campaigner
Step 1
Children explore Rosa’s motivation which will allows them to draw on work
from the preceding questions. Why do pupils think she acted as she did? Allow a few minutes paired discussion. Then move pupils into larger groups of 4/5
