In this session pupils get to work as history detectives matching clues within sources to statements historians have made about Amelia.
Using the active ‘prove it’ strategy, pupils in pairs visit a gallery of clues and try to work out which ones prove the statements to be true.
Learning objectives
- Pupils build up an appreciation of the types of evidence from this period available to historians
- They show ability to match given statements to supporting evidence
Step 1
Pupils are placed in pairs with a visor on which is written name of the school and words history detectives. They are then given a set of statements made about Amelia, so one of the pair will need to be a relatively confident and able reader. Worth reading through the statements aloud with the class first so everyone at least knows roughly what they are looking to prove.
Step 2
Now point out that around the room are sources i.e. clues in visual form. The pupils’ job is to work out which clue/source proves the statement to be true. As all sources bear a letter, all pupils have to do is to record the appropriate letter. To increase the level of challenge
