Medium term planning and planner for Scott of the Antarctic KS1
This topic has been designed for Term 3 of Y1 but would also suit use with older pupils. It lends itself very well to inclusion within a broadly cross-curricular topic on Hot and Cold
or Journeys. The story itself is moving, imbued as it is with heroism and sacrifice as well as noble defeat. It is a good example of what Gove and others have in mind when they
want children to develop grit and resilience!! In terms of historical skills and understanding, the topic provides great opportunities to look at sequencing and then causes of events. Most of you will be teaching Scott within a broader Antarctic topic integrating Geography (regions of cold world, why poles are so cold etc) and Science (how Antarctic explorers kept warm, Antarctic as a habitat etc).
