This lesson starts with encouraging pupils to spot differences between 3 castles to give them confidence before working in groups of 4, pupils are given 5 undated images of castles spanning a 500 year period which they then have to sequence. Rather than giving the pupils the criteria they need to place the castles correctly in time order, the task is designed to encourage pupils to generate their own criteria thereby making the learning go deeper. Once the correct chronological sequence is established, pupils then advance to thinking of possible reasons why the changes were necessary, drawing on their earlier knowledge of methods of defence and attack. The lesson concludes with consolidating knowledge of how castles changed and their understanding of a few simple reasons why.
