There has always been a tendency towards gender stereotyping when selecting which ‘famous’ men and women to teach at KS1. The men are the explorers and engineers, the women the nurses. We have tried to redress this by adding a couple of significant women who have often been overlooked.
Firstly we have featured Mary Anning the famous fossil-hunting young lady who pioneered much work in that area in the early 19th century. We have also produced a full planner and lost of brilliant accompanying lessons on Amy Johnson who was not only an aviator but also a first-class engineer as this tribute below shows.
If you are serious about opening up the possibilities of encouraging girls towards engineering, then this might be a good place to start.
