Focus concept: Making deductions/ similarity and difference
This task is designed to be non-threatening and to be carried out in small groups when the pupils have just been taught the ideas. It is an ideal task for LSAs to help with. But to ensure pupils are not simple repeating exactly what has just been taught, an unseen element has been introduced . In this way we can see if pupils can apply their knowledge to show understanding.
Basically you keep back three old toys which the pupils haven’t seen before , ones for which there is a modern equivalent. In the example of pupils’ work emanating from this task an old toy train. I suggest you have an old doll and another of your choice.
Pupils choose one toy each and quickly make a simple sketch of the item . They then explain how they know that the toys is old. For some children they will require their answers to be written for them Here we are looking for pupils to spot signs of age and to use appropriate vocabulary . The better answers will say how modern versions of this toys would be different showing a secure understanding of
