As the story develops there are a number of uses of time-related phrases that soon become familiar to children and before long they start using them. They are often not precise and this just adds to their value with young children. So what is the story about and what time-related words does it use to help children with the narrative flow.
As the title suggests the book is about an oak tree and what it witnesses over time. This is a simple story spanning a thousand years, over which time an acorn grows into a mighty oak. The tree witnesses a whole sweep of history, from the Norman invasion to a modern-day teddybears’ picnic, and on each page we see children playing different games around it, as well as the animals, birds and insects whose lives depend on the tree.
