Motivating introductory lessons which , from the outset, challenges pupils to compare two images of the same place from the start and end of Victoria’s reign, before moving on to look at the reasons for the change and their impact.
On the way pupils have to remember all the cool things the Victorians introduced and who the key players were.
Learning objectives
- Pupils, can identify 3 major changes that took place during this period, including industrialisation, urbanisation, growth of the railways etc
- They know that it was a period of intense pioneering achievements and can name two leading figures responsible and at least 4 innovations still with us today
- They know that this was a period of rapid change, usually referred to as revolutionary
Learning sequence
The topic starts by plunging pupils straight into the investigation. In just 5 minutes they have to compare 2 artists illustrations of the SAME SCENE , one from beginning, the other from towards the end of Victoria’s reign.
Pupils have to spot the 6 most significant changes. They start with 5 minutes listing of as many changes as they can, then they have 3 minutes to select the most significant six.
