By inclusion we mean three things here: setting suitable learning challenges, responding to pupils’ diverse needs, and overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups. Below are featured a range of ideas for differentiation that you might like to try. Later additions to the site will then deal with approaches for pupils with very specific learning difficulties. Also included here are ideas for helping poor readers and suggestions for whole-class inclusive activities. For easy reference the P levels are also provided to help you pitch the work for those pupils for whom NC levels are not very appropriate.
Ideas for differentiation in history
1. Placing sources and information on audio / tape/ MP3, so that pupils who cannot read can at least listen, perhaps with the text in front of them. It is a good use of LSA time to create these audio resources.
2. Pairing of confident and less confident readers. Use of Talking Tins at Key Stage 1. You can find out more about their use from the TalkPod website
3. Visual representations of ideas. Using large pictures wherever possible helps enormously and for many pupils it is their main way into history.
